How to fit three car seats across one back row

The 3-across puzzle, solved: narrow seats, the right order, and the cars that make it possible.

Three car seats across a single bench is the rite of passage for every family of five. It is doable — with the right seats and a method.

Step by step

  1. 1

    Measure your back seat

Measure the usable width at the belt line. You need roughly 17" per narrow seat.

  2. 2

    Choose narrow seats

Pick seats marketed as "3-across" — typically under 17 inches wide.

  3. 3

    Install the outboard seats first

Fit the two window seats, then thread the middle seat between them.

  4. 4

    Verify each install

Each seat should move less than one inch at the belt path.

Frequently asked questions

Can you fit 3 car seats in a rental car?
In many midsize and larger cars, yes — if you bring narrow 3-across seats. Reserve a specific large model rather than a class, as rental "or similar" can leave you with a too-narrow car.
